Grief and Loss Counseling

Dealing with Grief and Loss

Grief and Loss Counseling, also known as bereavement therapy, helps you cope with loss. You might be grieving about the death of a loved one, including close friends, colleagues, or pets. You might experience a loss from a breakup in a relationship, a sudden loss of a job, divorce, financial change, or health issues.

Grief and loss can cause you to feel overwhelming stress manifesting as physical and emotional pain that will impact your life negatively. You go through periods where you question why for too many things without answers. Questions of Why you cannot control your emotions, why something happened and why you feel stuck. The pain causes you to withdraw from your normal activities and interaction with others. It can trigger moments of anger, guilt, depression and sorrow. The grieving process is complex, and it is not the same for everyone.

Acknowledging the pain is an important part of the grief process. It is also essential that you know the pain will not always control you. Learning to understand what has happened will lessen the pain so that you can begin healing while transitioning into a mentally and emotionally stronger individual, so you can live again.

It is also important to give yourself space to grieve, and not ignore it because as humans we all move through the five stages of grief at a different pace: We all move through the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The challenge happens when we get stuck in denial and anger.
